This MX-5 came to us requiring a full weld-in roll cage for competitive motorsport use. The owner competes in sprints and hillclimbs, requiring the highest level of protection that meets Motorsport UK regulations.
Project Overview
Unlike bolt-in roll bars, a weld-in cage becomes a structural part of the vehicle. This provides significantly greater protection in the event of a roll-over, as the forces are distributed throughout the chassis rather than concentrated at mounting points.
Build Specifications
- Material: 45mm x 2.5mm CDS tube throughout
- Design: Multi-point cage with door bars
- Finish: Powder coated in customer's choice of colour
- Compliance: Built to current Motorsport UK K regulations
The Build Process
Starting with a stripped interior, we first created all the mounting points with proper reinforcement plates welded to the chassis. Each tube was then hand-formed, notched, and fitted before final welding. All welds are fully penetrating and inspected to ensure structural integrity.
Final Result
The completed cage provides competition-level protection while maintaining the ability to use the car on track days. With integrated harness mounting points and a properly braced structure, this MX-5 is now ready for serious competition.
